Pretoria Conference 2013

Eleventh International Environmental Enrichment Conference

Bontebuck

From Kabul I again flew to Dubai and on to Johannesburg where I was met by Robynn Ingle-Moller and Val Hare, stalwarts of the international movement to improve behavioural opportunities for zoo animals. The biannual conferences was hosted by the National Zoological Park, Pretoria, and held in the Dinokeng Wildlife reserve at Kwalata Safari Lodge. What a venue; early morning game drives most days! The big idea was to observe natural animal behaviours and their environmental and social contexts in the field and relate these to ideas for zoo improvements during presentation and workshop sessions. I’m sure these sessions, along with wonderful safari hospitality and camaraderie, will be long remembered!
